The name of an eleven year-old girl from Earlville was drawn as the winner of the Kendall County Republican Beef Raffle at the Kendall County Fair. Hannah Schuning’s winning ticket was drawn by Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis on Sunday, August 3rd, before a crowd of people waiting to hear their name called.
By having her ticket drawn, Hannah had to make the choice between one of the following: a Kendall County-raised heifer, fully processed and ready for freezer storage, or $1000.00.
Hannah chose the cash.
The Kendall County Beef Raffle started with an offer by Kendall County Board member Bob ‘H.D.’ Davidson to use a heifer which belonged to him for a fundraiser. Ultimately, the Beef Raffle was scheduled to conclude on the last day of the Kendall County Fair in order to give those who didn’t have the opportunity to bid on an animal at the 4-H auction a chance to win some Kendall County-raised beef. Since not everyone has a freezer large enough for that much beef, an alternate prize of $1000 was offered.
Kendall County Republican Chairman Keith Wheeler commented on the winner’s selection, “We are very glad that Hannah was the winner in the Kendall County Republican Beef Raffle. We’re confident that she will put that money to good use to benefit her and her family.”
Hannah plans to save the money for college. She was also very interested in the display check in the photograph as she explained, “None of my friends believe that I actually won $1000.”
